The Rug That’s Never the Right Size (and How to Fix It)

If there’s one design mistake almost everyone makes, it’s choosing a rug that’s too small.
You find a pattern you love, unroll it at home, and suddenly it looks like it’s floating awkwardly in the middle of the floor.

Don’t worry — it’s an easy fix. Getting the right rug size can completely change how your space feels, grounding the furniture and tying everything together.

Let’s break down how to get it right, room by room.

1. Living Room

The golden rule: your rug should connect your furniture, not sit apart from it.
Ideally, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug — this creates cohesion and anchors the seating area.

If your space allows, go larger — a rug that sits completely under all your main pieces will make the room feel luxurious and expansive.

2. Dining Room

Here, size is about practicality as much as aesthetics.
Choose a rug that extends at least 60 cm beyond all sides of the table so that chairs remain on it even when pulled out.
It prevents tripping edges and helps the dining area feel defined, especially in open-plan spaces.

3. Bedroom

A well-sized bedroom rug adds warmth and comfort underfoot.
If your bed is centred in the room, aim for a rug that sits about two-thirds underneath it, extending beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
Alternatively, use two runners on either side for a lighter, more flexible look.

4. Proportion matters

A rug that’s too small can make even a large room feel disconnected.
As a general rule, leave about 20–30 cm of visible floor around the rug to frame the space — it’s the sweet spot between “floating” and “wall-to-wall.”

5. Don’t fear layering

If you’ve fallen for a smaller rug, don’t panic.
Layer it over a larger natural fibre rug (like jute or sisal) for texture, warmth, and a relaxed, collected look.

Final Thought

A rug is more than decoration — it’s what connects your furniture, defines your space, and adds that all-important layer of comfort.
Get the size right, and suddenly everything else just falls into place.
