Centred or Off-Centred? Styling When the Window Isn’t Where It Should Be

We’ve all been there. You finally move into your dream space, start arranging furniture, and then realise... the window isn’t centred. Not even close.
It’s slightly to the left of the fireplace, or awkwardly hovering above one bedside table.
And once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.
The good news? Off-centred windows don’t have to look wrong.
With a few clever styling tricks, you can balance the visual weight of a room and make asymmetry look completely intentional.
1. Shift the focus
When the window is off-balance, the best trick is to draw the eye elsewhere.
Hang artwork, add shelving, or style a bold headboard to redirect attention.
Our brains crave balance, so giving them something deliberate to focus on helps the room feel composed, not crooked.
2. Use curtains to fake symmetry
One of our favourite designer cheats — extend your curtain track beyond the window frame.
Hang full-length curtains from wall to wall (or ceiling to floor) and suddenly the window looks twice the size and perfectly centred.
Bonus: it adds softness and texture that instantly elevates the space.
3. Mirror the imbalance
If a window sits off to one side, mirror its placement with something similar on the other — a tall plant, floor lamp, or piece of art.
You’re not correcting the asymmetry; you’re echoing it so the composition feels intentional.
4. Anchor with furniture
Bed not aligned with the window? No problem.
Position your bed where it feels most natural for the room, then use matching bedside tables and lamps to reintroduce balance.
In living rooms, you can do the same with sofas, credenzas, or low benches.
5. Keep lighting layered
Off-centred windows often mean uneven daylight.
Balance this with layered lighting — floor lamps, wall lights, or a pendant that draws the eye back to the middle of the room.
Light equals symmetry in design terms — use it to your advantage.

Final Thought
Not every room is perfectly proportioned — and that’s what gives it character.
With a few visual adjustments, an off-centred window can actually make your space more interesting, layered, and lived-in.
