Exterior Refurbishment: 3 Easy Tips to choose the right Exterior Colour for Your House

Choosing the perfect exterior colour for your house can be both exciting and daunting. The right colour not only enhances curb appeal but also reflects your personal style and harmonises with the surrounding environment. As Interior Designers working across the Southwest region of the UK, we have come across this exterior conundrum all over the country, advising on both style and colour. Here are my three easy tips to help you choose the ideal exterior colour for your home.

1. Take a Lot of Photos of Homes You Like

Inspiration is Everywhere!

One of the best ways to start your colour selection process is by taking photos of homes you admire. Whether you’re strolling through your neighbourhood or travelling, keep your camera or phone handy to capture exterior colours that catch your eye.

Points to Consider:

  • Variety of Styles: Don’t limit yourself to homes that are exactly like yours. Take photos of a variety of architectural styles and colours. This will help you see how different colours look on different types of houses.
  • Lighting Conditions: Pay attention to how colours look in different lighting conditions. Take photos at various times of the day to see how the colours change in different lighting.
  • Neighbourhood Context: Consider the overall colour scheme of your neighbourhood. While you want your home to stand out, it should also complement the surrounding houses to maintain a cohesive look.

By gathering a collection of inspiring photos, you’ll start to see patterns and preferences emerge, guiding you towards a colour palette that resonates with you.

2. Try Multiple Samples of Real Paint

Test Before You Commit!

Once you have a few colour ideas in mind, it’s crucial to test multiple samples of real paint on your house. Colours can look vastly different on a small swatch versus a large exterior wall, and natural lighting can change their appearance throughout the day.

Points to Consider:

  • Sample Size:  Paint large swatches directly onto different areas of your exterior. At least 1-foot square patches will give you a better sense of how the colour will look on a larger scale.
  • Different Locations: Apply samples to various parts of your house—front, back, and sides. This allows you to see how the colour interacts with different light exposures.
  • Observe Over Time: Leave the samples up for several days and observe them at different times—morning, noon, and evening. Notice how they change under different lighting conditions and weather.

By testing multiple samples, you can confidently choose a colour that looks great in all conditions and on all parts of your house.

3. Don’t Forget About Landscaping and Plants

Harmonise with Nature!

Your home’s exterior colour should not only complement the architecture but also harmonise with the surrounding landscaping and plants. Consider the colours of your garden, trees, and other natural elements in your garden, driveway and street.

Points to Consider:

  • Seasonal Changes: Think about how your landscape changes with the seasons. For example, if you have a lot of blooming flowers in the spring, a neutral exterior colour might provide a beautiful backdrop without clashing.
  • Greenery and Foliage: Consider the dominant colours of your plants and trees. Earthy tones and natural colours often work well with lush green landscapes.
  • Hardscaping Elements: Don’t forget to take into account the colours of permanent elements like driveways, walkways, and fences. Ensure that your chosen exterior colour complements these elements as well.

By considering your landscaping, you can choose an exterior colour that creates a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment.
